LOS VINOS Y EL MENÚ

Esta degustación es la cuarta de la serie de vinos de  Australia programada para el 2015, que en esta oportunidad incluye vinos de Port Phillip y Noroeste de Victoria.  Los vinos se seleccionaron considerando las características de las regiones donde provienen y buscando reflejar el terroir, ya que este condiciona no solo la variedad de la uva que se cosecha sino su estilo de vino. También que se buscó darle un sentido exploratorio sobre las varietals y estilos proveniente de esta región, caracterizada por pequeños productores que no alcanzan a estar presentes en los portafolios de los grandes importadores, y por tanto difíciles de conseguir en el mercado local pero que nos dan la oportunidad de conocer varietales y estilos  diferentes a lo que es la percepción de los vinos australianos

2011 B Minor – Ben Haines Blanc de Blancs – Grampians, Victtoria

IMG_0211The Wine: This a sparkling made entirely from chardonnay grapes in the traditional champagnoise style, but left four years in the bottle with the lees and not degorged.  The result is a rather turbid sparkling.

 2012 Ladies who Shoot their Lunch – Chardonnay – Fowles Wine ,Strathbogie Ranges

The Wine: Launched in 2006, Ladies who Shoot their Lunch  – a label created by Fowles Wine of the Strathbogie Ranges in Victoria – have been created specifically to match with wild food or “game”, that fancy culinary word for things you can go and kill yourself before devouring them. (Think pigeon, duck, venison and rabbit.).

Fowles Wine is family owned and the first Victorian winery to win the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge trophy for Australia’s Best Shiraz.  Thevineyards and winery are located in the dramatic granite landscape of the Strathbogie Ranges wine region, Victoria, Australia.

 2012 B Minor – Marsanne – Yarra Valley

The Winery: In deference to some 85-year-old vines, I was seduced by Marsanne during my time in Nagambie Lakes, Central Victoria. To fuel an already raging inferno, in 2009 I hosted a vertical tasting of Marsanne from 1971 through to 2008. The variety became gilded in my impressions.  This left 2 hallmarks – one, I must further explore Marsanne beyond the warmer climates, and two, it gives so, so much back with time.

The Wine. Marsanne is never in a hurry. Aside from its tardy ripening tendencies the 2012 ferment was slow, cool and relaxed. The winemaking was very stripped back – all about texture, character and freshness. Ten months on lees and one year in bottle prior to release paid respect to a wine that does things in its own time.

I love the layering of aromas and flavours in this wine. Ethereal citrus, floral and spice tones mingle with deeper characters of stonefruit, honeysuckle and brioche. This is the Warramunda vineyard in a glass from a stunning Yarra Valley Vintage.

 2012  Josef Chromy Pepik Pinot Noir – Tasmania.

IMG_0214The Winery: Josef Chromy Wines is a state-of-the-art winery at the base of the vineyard at Relbia, south of Launceston. The modern and minimalist exterior provides a home for some of the best winemaking equipment available. Fruit reception begins with a vibrating hopper that gently shakes the grapes into the destemmer, which has a smooth plastic cage to prevent damage to the delicate berries. The grapes are pumped gently into the press through a peristaltic pump, using the same technology that transfers live fish or pumps blood during heart bypass surgery.

A high tech German press enables juice extraction at low pressures, giving more delicate aromatic juices. All Pinot Noir is fermented in small batch open top fermenters and a pneumatic plunging device, co-developed by Josef, is used to gently plunge the cap and manage the extraction of colour and tannin during the fermentation. All the equipment and processes in the winery are designed to respect the delicate varietal flavors of the high quality, cool-climate Tasmanian fruit.

The Wine. Relbia, Tasmania –  Pepik is the juicy, fresh, and easy drinking Pinot Noir in the Josef Chromy range. Bright red with vibrant cherry fruit, subtle French oak and a supple Pinot palate.  Minimal oak and bright cherry flavours are typical of the style. Pepik is the traditional Czech nickname for those named Josef. Josef Chromy is established at Relbia in Tasmania’s north, just south of Launceston.

 2012 Best’s  Great Western – Pinot Meunier

 Pinot Meunier (historically just Meunier) is a dark-berried grape variety most famously used in the Champagne blend. Less highly acclaimed than its partners Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier is something of a quiet workhorse in Champagne. The word Meunier is French for “miller”, and refers here to the “floury” appearance of the underside of the vines’ leaves.

 2012 Moorooduc Estate – Whole Bunch Shiraz

 The Wine: This shiraz is 100% from McIntyre Vineyard fruit, 100% whole bunch fermented. The wine is deep crimson in colour and the aromatics are intense and complex. Black pepper spice on ripe dark berry fruit is overlaid with savoury, roasted root vegetable and Campari-like citrus peel characters. These complexities are joined on the palate by an abundance of fine, mouth filling tannins, which together, give this wine beautiful silky texture and palate length. Only 118 cases produced.

2012 Best’s  Great Western – Late Disgorging Sparkling Shyraz

The Wine: Great Western Produces Shiraz that is ideally suited to the Sparkling Red style made famous by the region’s producers in the 1950’s. Spice and savoury aromatics are typical characters found in our Sparkling Shiraz. A uniquely Australian wine style that is suitable for drinking cool at all festive occasions and with a variety of cuisine.

VINOTABLES RATINGS FOR THIS TASTING:

En la degustación de la reunión # 47 Miguel presentó una amplia variedad de vinos (3 blancos y 4 tintos) de diversas sub-regiones de Port Phillip y NW Victoria, incluyendo: Grampians, Strathbogie Ranges (Central Victoria), Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Great Western y Mornington Peninsula. Entre los vinos había un espumante blanco (#1) y uno tinto (#7), ambos en botellas con tapa corona. Los socios dieron a los vinos evaluaciones relativamente altas, generalmente entre 88 y 90 puntos (calidad muy buena o excelente), con la excepción del primer blanco, el espumante B Minor, que logró evaluaciones entre 68 y 76 puntos (calidad aceptable e inferior).

Los vinos que más gustaron fueron los blancos #2  (Chardonnay Ladies who shot their lunch) y #3 (2012 B minor Marsanne), a los cuales los socios dieron puntajes entre 87 y 90 puntos (vinos entre muy buenos y excelentes).

Los vinos tintos (#4-5-6 y 7) fueron también considerados por los socios con calidades entre muy buena y excelente. El que mas gusto fue el # 6 (2012 Moorooduc Shiraz).
La degustación fue completamente ciega, ya que no hubo información alguna sobre los vinos antes de catarlos, salvo por algunas indicaciones generales que con que Miguel orientó la degustación.  Aun en estas condiciones, la mayoría de los socios identificó correctamente las cepas de los vinos.  Solo el Marsanne blanco se mostro elusivo.
En resumen, tuvimos una excelente degustación, muy didácticamente presentada, con vinos de alta calidad y un menú con un maridaje impecable.  La tabla siguiente muestra los detalles de la evaluación:  VINOTABLES degustacion _47 evaluacion
